FAQ

Q:  I’d like to get to know more about Beaver Island and Lake Michigan, what do you recommend as resources?

A: The Beaver Island Chamber of Commerce has put together a terrific website where you can find all sorts of useful and interesting information — https://www.beaverisland.org. Visit Michigan’s DNR page to learn more about the Salmon and Lake Trout found in Lake Michigan.

Q: What should I wear?

A: Be smart, check the weather and remember to layer. It’s much easier to shed a layer than wish you had an extra layer. It’s also recommended that you wear deck shoes or sneakers. Of course other types of rubber-soled shoes will work, but they may also leave your feet exposed to the less fun elements of fishing — bait overrun, fish slime, etc.

Q: Is there a bathroom on-board?

A: Yes, the Kelly Day is equipped with a marine-style bathroom, called a head. The head on the Kelly Day is cleaned daily and tidied up multiple times a day.

Q: What if my group has caught more fish than it can consume?

A: There is no need to keep every fish you catch. You can always catch-and-release. If you find that you have kept more fish than you need and it’s too late to release, the extra catch can be donated.

Q: Can I bring my well-mannered dog on the boat?

A: While Captain Bob adores four-legged creatures big and small, dogs are not allowed on the boat. This rule stems from safety concerns for the animal.

Q: What fish can I expect to catch?

A: The Kelly Day trolls for Lake Trout and Salmon.

Q: I’ve caught all these fish, now what?

A: Be sure to bring along a cooler for transporting the fish. If you find that you are really in over your head with “processing” the fish, Captain Bob has been known to, or help make arrangements to clean, package and freeze the haul until you’re ready to depart to the mainland.

Q: What kind of fishing equipment and bait should I bring?

A: NONE! The Kelly Day is a trolling vessel which means that it uses specialized equipment to fish. Any additional gear poses a risk to the gear itself, the trolling gear, and even passengers.

Q: Where do we go to fish?

A: While a fisherman doesn’t share his secret locations, the Kelly Day travels about 15 miles out into Lake Michigan from Beaver Island (about halfway between the island and mainland). All told it’s about a 20-minute ride. From there, you’ll troll the waters in that area for Lake Trout and Salmon.
